From a coffee to an ink-free material: how Cibico works

A material made from organic waste and digital fabrication, with no inks, that is recycled at the end to start another project. We told it in an animation that begins with a coffee.

Sound familiar?

If any of these sound like you, this project is about you.

  1. You have a new material, process or system and, without showing the machine, nobody gets it.
  2. What makes it different happens in several steps your audience never sees.
  3. You talk to people in design, communications or culture who need to grasp it fast.
  4. And you want the full cycle to show: where it comes from and where it goes when it’s done.

That’s where Naifactory came in.

Graphic materials without inks

The Cibico project is a system for creating graphic communication materials from biomaterials made of organic waste and digital fabrication. It is versatile and uses no inks, so it is 100% biodegradable.

The material can also be recycled and reused to produce new projects, so its life cycle closes completely.

How we told it

Fine-line 2D illustration on a light, paper-textured background, with touches of orange, ochre and blue.

  1. Still from the video: a hand holds the portafilter of a coffee machine while coffee pours into an orange cup on a wooden table

    Starting with a cup

The story starts with a coffee. A gesture everyone knows is the way in to a material far fewer people know.

  2. Still from the video: a woman in a helmet and sunglasses pedals a cargo bike with brown heaps in the box, in front of a city drawn in lines
    02

The material moves through the city

A cargo bike carries brown material through the city. The journey is told with a character and a street, not a diagram.

  3. Still from the video: a digital fabrication machine marks a brown board on a table, with white lines under the head
    03

    Digital fabrication in plain sight

A digital fabrication machine runs over a brown board and marks its pattern. The technical side of the project makes sense just by watching.

  4. Still from the video: a person in a lab coat lifts a framed brown board to look at it; in the background, out of focus, another person works at a table
    04

    The material, in hand

A close shot puts the biomaterial board in the centre and leaves the team blurred behind it. The material is the star: you can see it and almost touch it.
