From fruit to product: less waste, in animated illustration

Essence Food wants to cut food waste with an approach of its own. We told it in animated illustration, from the fruit to the lab, the factory and the product.

Sound familiar?

If any of these sound like you, this project is about you.

  1. Your company proposes a different way to solve a problem we all share and, said in one sentence, it sounds like a slogan.
  2. Behind the product there is a process, with a lab, a factory and logistics, that the customer never sees.
  3. You have to talk about sustainability without falling back on the usual forests and planets.
  4. And your product ends up in very different places, so the message has to work in all of them.

That’s where Essence Food came in.

Telling a new approach to food waste

Essence Food has a new approach to reducing food waste and a commitment to sustainability, and the animation had to tell both at once.

On screen there is room for fruit and vegetables, a lab, a factory and branded products that reach a service trolley, a glass and an aircraft seat. All of it in detailed illustrations and a visual style of its own.

How we told it

Flat illustration with a paper texture, a palette of muted greens and blues and touches of orange.

  1. Still from the video: a factory with chimneys, vans with a pear drawn on them and a green pickup with the Essence Food logo; in the foreground, a branded crate of fruit and vegetables

The whole journey in one shot

Factory, vans, pickup and a branded fruit crate fit in a single shot. Viewers understand what the company does straight away.

  2. Still from the video: slices of orange, kiwi, pear, mushroom and banana on a blue-grey background, drawn in flat shapes with soft shadow
    02

    The fruit takes the lead

The subject is food waste, and the video tells it with the food itself: drawn big, in simple shapes, as if cut from paper.

  3. Still from the video: slices of fruit and vegetables on a blue-grey background, with a huge number in the centre and the caption “UP TO 60% LESS VOLUME”

    One number, big

The caption puts a huge number in the middle and lets the slices of food act as a frame. The figure reads in one glance.

  4. Still from the video: split screen; on the left, a man in a white shirt pushes a service trolley with branded packs past a door numbered 523; on the right, a hand drops a slice of lime into a glass, next to an Essence Food bag

    The product in everyday life

A split screen shows the product in two scenes at once: served at a door and dropped into a glass. It reaches very different places under the same brand.
