Morandi and a ceramicist’s craft, in a single piece

A Giorgio Morandi retrospective and a ceramicist working at the wheel: the promotional piece crosses images from the exhibition with María Lázaro’s craft.

Giorgio MorandiCorporate video

Sound familiar?

If any of these sound like you, this project is about you.

  1. Your exhibition is a retrospective and you don’t want a video that walks through the rooms work by work.
  2. You want the video to convey what visitors will feel.
  3. You have the idea of putting someone from another craft to work alongside the art, and it still has to become a piece.
  4. And the piece has to resemble the exhibition: sober, careful, no effects to spare.

That’s where Fundación Mapfre came in.

An exhibition and a craft in dialogue

“Morandi. Resonancia infinita” (Infinite Resonance) is the retrospective Fundación Mapfre devoted to Giorgio Morandi (Bologna, 1890–1964), one of the most significant and hardest-to-classify artists of 20th-century art.

The piece was conceived as a performance: images from the exhibition and the work of ceramicist María Lázaro, with Dclay studio, in a single video.

How we told it

Low, cool light, blue-grey tones, close shots of hands and clay, and the white coat going onto the vessel.

  1. Still from the video: a woman in profile, in a light apron, holds a tall narrow-necked vessel in her hands in front of a window with square panes; on the right, her name and craft are shown

    Introducing the person at work

A simple caption with her name and craft, over a shot against the window light. The ceramicist enters the piece as its protagonist, not as scenery.

  2. Still from the video: close-up of two hands stained with grey clay around a tall clay form on the wheel, with cold light behind
    02

    Hands, up close

The camera stays at wheel height and moves in so close that the clay gleams. You can see the gesture of shaping.

  3. Still from the video: a hand with a tool spreads a white coat over the neck of a dark vessel while the other hand rests a finger at the mouth of the piece
    03

    Small, precise gestures

Two hands, two tasks at once: one holds the piece from inside, the other spreads the white coat. A medium shot shows both actions without a cut.

  4. Still from the video: a wooden spatula with white paste resting on the neck of a white vessel, with the ceramicist’s face out of focus on the left
    04

    White now fills the frame

The vessel, now white, takes up much of the frame. Focus stays on the tool and the blur leaves the ceramicist in the background.
