Photography and flamenco: an exhibition for those who couldn’t be there

Two photographers, one exhibition and people in other cities who couldn’t go and see it. We made the piece that fuses the works with Paco Hidalgo’s flamenco dancing.

Sound familiar?

If any of these lines sounds like you, this project is about you.

  1. Your exhibition is in one city and part of your audience is in another.
  2. You want to bring the works to people who can’t visit, without making a video catalogue.
  3. You have an artist from another discipline who can talk to the photographs, and you’re missing a piece that captures it.
  4. And the result has to look after both the photographs and the person dancing in front of them.

That’s where Fundación Mapfre came in.

Taking the exhibition to people who can’t visit

Fundación Mapfre was presenting an exhibition by the photographers Paolo Gasparini and Pérez Siquier. Part of the audience couldn’t visit because they were in other cities.

The answer was a performance piece: the dancer Paco Hidalgo stands in front of the works and fuses them with his flamenco, in a face-to-face with the work of other artists.

How we told it

Rooms with pink and grey-blue walls, a body in the foreground facing the photographs and layers of image superimposed in post-production.

  1. Still from the video: a dancer with a shaved head and beard, bare-chested, seen from behind and in profile, between three beach photographs hung on a pink wall
    01

Face to face with the work

Back to camera, the dancer is wedged between two photographs, looking at what we look at. Body and work share the frame.

  2. Still from the video: wide shot of a room with a pink wall and a row of framed photographs; in the centre, a barefoot dancer in black underwear, one arm raised and the other bent
    02

    The whole room in frame

A wide shot shows the row of photographs and the dancer’s body together, at real scale. It’s clear the piece happens inside the exhibition.

  3. Still from the video: split screen; on the left, the dancer facing front in a dance pose; on the right, the same dancer from behind, hands on his waist, in front of the photographs
    03

Two points of view at once

The screen splits in two: the dancer from the front and from behind, with the exhibition’s photographs behind him. The edit shows the movement from both sides without a cut.

  4. Still from the video: in black and white, the dancer’s face, with a beard and an earring, superimposed on a photograph of uniformed figures in a line, behind some frame lines
    04

    The face over the photograph

In black and white, the dancer’s face is superimposed on one of the photographs. This is the moment body and work blend into one image.
